There’s no more exciting city than New York City — especially with not just one, but two popular Summer Springboard programs on offer!

Between Barnard College, Columbia University, and the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID), you’ll experience summer like a local student on one of two of the most dynamic urban campuses in the country.

At Barnard College, Columbia University, the spirit and innovation of the city shine in quintessentially New York course offerings, like Architecture, Fashion Merchandising, Business & Entrepreneurship, and Finance & Investing. Or you could dive into the world of Interior Design at NYSID, one of the world’s premier design colleges in a city renowned as a global hub for design and creativity.

But our campuses are not just chosen for their prestigious reputations; they’re also located in some of the most exciting neighborhoods the Big Apple has to offer. We select our campuses to complement the immersive experience of being a student in New York, meaning you’ll surround yourself with a diverse and lively community, iconic landmarks, and some of the safest neighborhoods in the city.

Known for its historic charm, tree-lined streets, and beautiful brownstone buildings, NYSID’s Gramercy Park neighborhood is just a stone’s throw from the Empire State Building and Union Square, while still managing to feel like a quaint, tucked-away corner of Manhattan.

On the Upper West Side of the city, Morningside Heights — home to Barnard College, Columbia University — offers intellectual Ivy League vibes with historic architecture and a taste of nature nestled between tranquil Central Park and the Hudson River.
Wherever you choose to study with Summer Springboard in New York, you’re in the action, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. From excursions to the city’s top landmarks and destinations to enjoying its incredible local food scene, the opportunities are endless.

But you’re not the only one feeling the call of the “city of dreams”–as the saying goes, “if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.” That’s why NYC has long lured the most gifted and successful of every field, from actors to entrepreneurs to artists. This is also true in academia: SSB’s instructors are at the top of their fields, from finance geniuses to blockchain innovators.

Want to learn from the best and live authentic student city life? NYC is the place to be!

At Summer Springboard, our interns experience more than just a traditional internship. They live and learn immersed in a new country and culture, just like our programs do, helping prepare and guide students for the summer ahead.

We caught up with our cohort of interns living and working in Costa Rica to hear about how their adventure is going.

Admissions & Programs Intern, Eile Harris, tells us she’s been enjoying the beautiful geographical diversity of Costa Rica, which allows for an adventurous lifestyle alongside her work as an intern.

“What’s that thing they say in real estate? LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION. I didn’t expect to be able to travel to the beach, to a volcano, and to a waterfall all in one day, but in Costa Rica that is exactly what you get,” says Eile. “Never have I been able to live in a place so beautiful, that you just have to take some time to take everything in.”

TEGI Interns living the life at Hacienda La Chimba

She also appreciates the melting pot of cultures reflected in the local cuisine, finding joy in the variety of new flavors and combinations. But more so, she values the community aspect of the internship.

“You never know what it’s like to move in with a group of people that you have never met before, and that can be hard in itself, let alone to another country,” she says. “I am so grateful to be housed with such incredible humans!”

Fellow intern, Jill Villa, echoes Eile’s sentiment about the natural beauty of Costa Rica.

“My favorite part of living in Costa Rica is the beautiful scenery we get to see and explore every day,” says Jill. “I love trekking through the national parks, finding different wildlife, and visiting the breathtaking waterfalls.”

Case in point

For Jill, the internship is also a gateway to understanding business operations within the educational travel industry.

“This internship aligns with my future career goals in many ways,” says Jill. “Not only do I get to connect with people on a personal level, but I learn more about how to help them in the best way possible.”

When it comes to career, intern Jules Martinez might not be entirely sure what she wants to do with her life just yet but agrees that the internship combines her biggest interests: travel, working with teens, and working in education. After graduating from university in 2022, Jules joined Summer Springboard as an RA, and fell in love with the organization’s mission and team. When she saw the opportunity to join the team again in Costa Rica, she knew she had to apply.

Time away from home isn’t always easy, and Jules admits the biggest challenge so far has been missing her family and cat. But despite homesickness, Jules finds solace in the tight-knit group of interns.

“My favorite part of this internship will always be the team,” Jules says. “I seriously could not have asked for a better group to be with.”

Each intern’s journey is also profoundly shaped by the dedication and guidance of our internship supervisors, whose expertise and support are essential to the experience in Costa Rica.

Jose Hernandez-Ugalde, Intern Supervisor at Summer Springboard and Costa Rica Field Coordinator for Global Leadership Adventures, has been with Terra Education since 2018; his brother Daniel just celebrated 20 years with Terra, so he has been working in and around the organization for many years. His experience has allowed him to deeply understand the benefits and opportunities provided by the internship and the professional doors the internship opens.

Hard at work in their Costa Rica home office

“There are plenty of benefits both for Terra as a company and for the interns and young professionals working in the international field,” Jose explains. “Terra attracts young professionals who are inspired to live abroad and to gain professional experience with a leading company in international travel and experiential education,” he says.

Jose also emphasizes the learning opportunities available through the company’s involvement in local initiatives.

“Interns can visit programs throughout Costa Rica and learn about local communities, grassroots organizations, [and] GLA involvement in local initiatives to improve communities,” Jose says.

Sammy Gacsi, Costa Rica Internship Admissions Manager, has a rich history of over 25 years in youth development, and his perspective is invaluable for shaping the professional paths of interns.

“The main benefit is to learn to manage, create, improve professional skill sets in an international working environment where time management, efficiency, remote work, and productive project management are in the forefront.”

With the guidance of Jose, Sammy, and other dedicated leaders, Summer Springboard interns are not only supported in their current job but are also prepared for future professional challenges and opportunities in the educational travel industry. As they reflect on their enriching experiences in Costa Rica, it’s clear that the journey has been much more than just an opportunity to work abroad. It has been a transformative chapter in their lives, providing them with invaluable lessons in cultural immersion, professional development, and personal growth.

We are deeply thankful to our dedicated team of interns, supervisors, and the vibrant community of Costa Rica for making these experiences possible!

Another summer is upon us and we’re so excited to bring you another year of programming at some of the most prestigious universities and the most interesting cities in the world!

Each year, we pull out all the stops to bring students the best experience possible — from expert instructors to engaging hands-on activities and excursions designed to bring the fields and majors you are most excited about to life.

At Summer Springboard, we truly value the feedback from our students. It’s what drives us to continuously improve and deliver a summer program that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of both our students and their parents.

We’re committed to providing you with an experience that is not only enjoyable but also prepares our students for the exciting journey ahead as you embark on your college adventure.

So when we say, “Don’t take our word for it” — we mean it!

Looking back at our feedback from nearly two thousand students last year, we’re excited to learn that we consistently meet our goals and promises to you.

Here’s just some of what our students had to say about last year’s Summer Springboard program:

What students had to say about how SSB gave them clarity about their future:

“I really enjoy the courses and the project. I had so much fun, made a lot of friends. And I think this program helped me to determine my college major.”

“It was great here. Almost everything was perfect and I genuinely feel that I gained something from this. I finally know what I want to do in life and want to work hard for it.”

“I really enjoyed the class I took during my time here. It really gave me inspiration to look more upon what I want to major in.”

“The SSB biotech program really helped me to confirm my passion for pursuing biology in college. I also am now considering majoring in biotechnology specifically next year due to the learning I acquired during this course.”

What students had to say about their SSB courses:

“I loved how hands-on emergency medicine was. The instructor was very supportive in how she taught us and fixed our mistakes when we needed it. I loved being part of SSB. I wish I could be here longer to keep making friends and gain more knowledge.”

“I learned so much more about psychology and neuroscience and the program really helped to reinforce my desire to pursue psychology in college. This also served as a great opportunity to also get a college experience and I think it really helped to prepare me and make me feel more ready for college.”

“I thought the business and entrepreneurship course was absolutely outstanding, the professor was extremely knowledgeable and had valuable information to give at all times. I would strongly recommend keeping him on board as an instructor.”

“I truly enjoyed everything about this course. The exercises were an amazing way to get my mind going, the simulation was extremely fun, I learned a lot from the guest speakers, and I had a great time getting to know my group and working on the project with them.”

What students had to say about the friends they made:

“I don’t think I’ve ever made closer friends or had fun and learned things at the same time. I would come back every year if I could.”

“I actually loved it. At first it was kinda awkward but once we got into classes and started making friends I had some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. And the course I took, marine biology, was interesting and engaging all the way through.”

“I loved being able to meet super cool people from across the globe and I’ll cherish those memories forever.”

What students had to say about the SSB instructors and staff:

“The staff was amazing. My mentor was very welcoming and helpful for everything. I made quick friends. I wish the time was even longer. I experienced a sense of independence from my parents while still knowing I have staff that will understand me and be there for me.”

“I have met so many incredible and diverse human beings. I have gotten to live on my dream campus at Yale and I am forever thankful. The staff members and the campus directors were the most amazing people.”

“All of the staff are very friendly and caring. Hannah especially went above and beyond to make me as comfortable as possible!”

“My professor was by far the most helpful teacher I’ve ever had.”

“The mentors and other staff here were amazing. Really helpful and made the activities fun and engaging. It definitely helped me feel more prepared for college and my future.”

What students had to say about the SSB experience overall:

“Coming into the programme, I was really nervous and shy but being a residential student helped me open up more and get comfortable with people in my dorm. Nonetheless I was able to interact with people from my dorm, my electives, my circle group and academic track. So basically everyone. It was a very good experience and I’ve made really great friendships. I hope this programme continues and hopefully my siblings get to enjoy it too.”

“I love the instructor of the neuroscience and psychology class. The mentors are supportive and all dedicated and interesting people. I also had an amazing time meeting new friends from all around. The activities and excursions were life-changing. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in expanding their knowledge on a topic they love.”

“It was one of the best experiences, living on a college campus with new friends! It was the perfect balance of safe control and independence. Courses were not rigorous and I appreciated the evening activities!”

“It was a great opportunity for me to further explore a potential career path for me while also having a ton of fun. I believe wholeheartedly that this experience transformed me for the better.”

*Quotes have been lightly edited for grammar, spelling and punctuation.

One figure that stood out to us immediately is that the majority of our students reported that their SSB campus experience increased their career clarity, meaning they left with a clearer idea of their future goals and aspirations for the next chapter in their life.

As we look forward to another exciting summer at Summer Springboard, we’re proud of the impact our programs have had on students’ personal and academic growth. We can’t wait to welcome a new group of students and help them unlock their full potential!

Reading through student and parent feedback on our programs at the end of each summer is what keeps us going and motivates us to deliver quality academic programs on top campuses year after year.

Why choose Georgetown this summer? It’s simple: That’s where the action is! With an election year heating up in Washington D.C., Georgetown University is your front-row seat to history in the making. We asked Summer Springboard’s Georgetown Program Director, Renae Pink, to give us the inside scoop on why this is the campus to be for high school students ready to dive into politics, law, and health. Here are her top five reasons:

DC Politics Up Close
How about a casual chat with political giants? Past students have mingled with the likes of Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Senator Cory Booker. You’ll see firsthand how the decisions that shape the world come to be.

Mentors Who’ve Been There
Our faculty aren’t just teachers; they’re seasoned pros from every corner of the globe. They’ve lived the lessons they teach, from ambassadors and CEOs to judges and doctors on the front lines of global health.

Experiential Legal Education
Aspiring law students will witness real-life courtroom dramas, learn from the people who practice and preside over our legal system, and get a “day in the life” experience of a lawyer.

Immersive Excursions
Students in every course experience real-world learning with visits to top sites like the Better Business Bureau, the CLASS Center for medical simulations, global health organizations, and even the Supreme Court.

Finding Your Cause
Discover what drives you. Georgetown is a place that encourages its students to turn their passion into purpose, setting the stage for the impact you’ll have tomorrow.

With unique excursions, mentorship from industry leaders, and hands-on learning experiences, Georgetown is the place to start shaping your future!

Title: Director of Admissions and Marketing

Hometown: Oceanside, CA

Educational Background:

BA in Political Science from Cal Poly Pomona

Masters in Public Administration from University of La Verne

Years with SSB: 7

Kevin Khy has been with Summer Springboard almost from its inception seven years ago, but he has almost a decade of Terra Education under his belt. Before heading up Admissions at Summer Springboard, Kevin spent several years with Global Leadership Adventures, first joining their Admissions team in San Diego and later leading Terra’s internship program in Costa Rica in 2016.

“The mission of GLA really resonated with me and while going through the interview process I realized that the company culture was exactly what I was looking for. It was an incredible experience to work with a team that was truly mission driven, everyone was so positive and great I couldn’t have asked for a better team to collaborate with. Naturally, when I was approached to join the Summer Springboard team, I jumped at the chance to join a new segment of Terra Education and have the opportunity to grow with it,” he says.

——————————————————————————

Q. If you had to name one, what’s your favorite part about working for SSB/Terra Education?

A. My favorite part of working for Summer Springboard is seeing our mission in action each summer. We start preparing for our programs in September all the way through June, with all of our hard work culminating in 8 weeks worth of impactful experiences for thousands of students. I’ve had the benefit of serving as a Campus Director for several summers, and to me seeing the growth of our students first-hand and having students and parents reach out to me years later is irreplaceable.

Q. Best memory from last summer?

A. I spent a short period of time at our Duke University campus and had an opportunity to see a “smaller” program; and seeing that close-knit familial atmosphere was a bit of a transformational experience for me, having spent so many summers in our other campus sessions with more than 100 students. It allowed me to appreciate the unique experience that comes with smaller sessions. It was great to be on a campus for a short period of time and be on a first name basis with most of the students!

Q. When you’re not at work, what hobbies do you enjoy?

A. When not at work I enjoy the outdoors: Camping, off-roading, etc. I find long drives very therapeutic! In 2022 I completed the Mojave trail with a friend; this is the longest offroad trail in the U.S. at over 140 miles long! I also have my first baby due in April and look forward to the new adventures of fatherhood!

Title: Program Director for UCLA and UCSD programs.

Hometown: Connecticut, born and raised!

Educational Background: BS in Accounting, Minor in Criminal Justice

Years with SSB: 2.5

Q. How did you find Summer Springboard, and what inspired you to join the team?

A. I wound up working at Summer Springboard via a very circuitous route. I originally wanted to work in federal law enforcement, investigating white-collar crime and public corruption. However, in college, I worked as a Resident Assistant (RA) and fell in love with that type of role. I really enjoyed being able to foster a community for everyone on my floor and help their transition from high school to college feel as comforting as possible by being a friendly face and someone anyone could talk to if they wanted. I found out I could do this full-time after I graduated in the form of a Residence Hall Director (RHD) position found on most college/university campuses – a full time university employee that oversees a residence hall in it’s entirety: staff supervision, student conduct, community building, etc. I worked as an RHD for four years until COVID hit, which drastically diminished the community engagement aspect that I enjoyed so much. At the time, I had a colleague who was on a 10-month employment contract with the university we worked at, which meant she had the summer free. She applied to work a seasonal role at Summer Springboard’s Boston location, and listed me as a reference. I looked into the company, decided to submit an application myself, was hired on as the Assistant Campus Director for the Boston program, and have been working for Summer Springboard ever since – and love it! It’s a great blend of community development and engagement, with being able to get creative in planning worthwhile and valuable programs for our students.

Q. If you had to name one, what’s your favorite part about working for SSB/Terra Education?

A. The people are an absolute blast to work with, and an amazing team of individuals. We have fun with what we do, and incorporate a great deal of passion and effort into the programs we organize.

Q. Best memory from last summer?

A. Chiefly, being on-site at the programs I oversee and being able to see all the hard work and effort come to fruition. On a smaller scale…I’m a sucker for dining hall food – pizza, pizza, pizza! In my opinion, UCLA’s dining hall pizza is the winner.

Q. When you’re not at work, what hobbies do you enjoy?

A. Mainly, flying! I earned my Private Pilot Certificate back in 2021, and have been flying recreationally ever since. Aviation is a huge passion of mine. I fly a Piper Warrior (PA-28-161). Outside of that, I enjoy movies, board and card games with friends, and exploring the outdoors! Love kayaking and hiking.

Heaven Martin: Psychology & Neuroscience at Yale

Heaven Martin’s junior year in high school brought an epitome: she wanted a career in the psychology field. After learning that people of color have disproportionate access to mental health services, and considering that studies have shown that talk therapy in particular can be beneficial to anyone navigating a new stage of life, dealing with stressors, or simply needing a trained ear, she felt her calling.

“Therapy is not only a good way to deal with the hardships of life but it provides you tools to prevent or manage these hardships. I also want to deter society from thinking that therapy is only for those who are mentally unstable. Therapy teaches skills that can help with an array of situations and many don’t think about this,” she says.

With this newfound vigor, Heaven began to research options to satiate her desire for knowledge. Her search brought her to Summer Springboard’s Psychology & Neuroscience academic track; it immediately clicked. “I knew that this opportunity could give me a sense of career readiness and college campus experience that I wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else,” she said. Unfortunately, family funds were tight and it didn’t seem to be in the cards for her the coming summer.

That all changed when Heaven got an email about SSB’s IDEA Scholarship a few weeks later. She rushed to apply. A killer essay and one scholarship award later, she found herself jetting across the country to SSB’s Yale Campus, away from her family for the first time.

Six Flags New England field trip

Between dissecting a sheep brain to interactive group projects, Heaven stayed busy academically and learned new concepts that brought further insight into the field of psychology. She credits her instructor, Hannah Bernhard M.Sc, with bringing her knowledge to the next level.

“Hannah gave us so much information but it never felt overwhelming or difficult. She allowed for a lot of questions as well and I feel like she really prepared me for my current AP psychology class,” she says.

However, the experience brought more than just academic satisfaction: Heaven found that the social and personal growth benefits almost matched those gained in the classroom. She had initially had reservations about flying across the country to spend two weeks with people she had never met.

Turns out, getting out of her comfort zone was a good thing.

“I no longer feel afraid of not making friends. I know that in time they will come and college is a place to meet people who will like you for you. I also learned about the difficulty of time management as I had to manage a class, a project, and other activities! I also learned about the importance of networking…it can set you up later in life. I feel more confident about leaving my home and living in a dorm which was a huge fear of mine. I also believed I gained some independence from being away from my family,” she says. “ I was scared to go but also just thinking about spending time at Yale made me feel proud of myself.”

Heaven met Jimena, SSB’s other IDEA scholarship recipient, in the airport en route to Yale, and the two became fast friends.

Both of SSB’s 2023 IDEA recipients enjoying their success

“We still text all the time,” Heaven says. While the two joined different tracks (Jimena’s passions lie in the Pre-Med realm) they found a lot of common ground and their personalities “just clicked.”

Jimena Cervantes: Emergency Medicine at Yale

For Jimena, Yale was also a no-brainer: “It has one of the greatest medical programs in the U.S and SSB had the Emergency Medicine course at that campus.” Her dreams of becoming a cardiologist were the main drive behind her scholarship application and her choice of campus.

“I was inspired to apply for the Scholarship as studying medicine has always been my passion. I felt that this program could get me closer to my dream of being a cardiologist or at least make me realize if it’s really what I want. When i first heard about the program i thought it was perfect for me. It was a chance to be independent, to study medicine, etc.,” she says.

In the course of her research, she came across some testimonial videos from former SSB students–this was the tipping point, and she decided to make the leap.

Heaven’s advice for students considering joining Summer Springboard?

“It will be a life-changing experience. Not only will you have an amazing experience but you will also meet some of the best people of your life. You will also learn so many new things and hear from so many different perspectives. With a program as diverse as SSB, everyone is bound to learn or experience something new.”
