Course Overview
Whatever you do in life, foundational business skills such as effective communication, sales and marketing, and financial management will serve you well. These skills let you transform your ideas into a real business that will give you greater control of your destiny. Students will learn firsthand from business veterans about starting and running a business. Over the course of the program, they will develop a plan for a new venture and pitch their idea to real world investors. Along the way, meet with leaders from different areas of business and finance.

Christopher J. Littel
Business & Entrepreneurship North Carolina State University Raleigh
Chris is a Lecturer in Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Poole College of Management at NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to joining NC State, Chris was Instructor in Entrepreneurship and Management at the Institute for Entrepreneurship at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Hands-On Learning
Students will examine best practices in Research and Development (R&D), Operations, Marketing, and Finance. Understand the mechanics of scaling a business while maintaining quality.
Students become part of a new company and configure themselves into teams working on various aspects of a business. The program culminates in a shark tank environment with professional investors.
Real World Insights
At Duke, students will visit the following businesses: First Flight Venture Center, NC Biotech Center, American Underground Business Accelerator, Biolabs
Career Exploration
Business is a very broad field and there are opportunities for a range of personalities and talents. From creative marketers to hard-nosed financial analysts, there are myriad careers you may not have heard of. Together we will discuss the career options and the academic paths to get there. You'll get a deeper sense of your unique motivations and aptitudes and gain an understanding of the academic options for various specializations within the field of business.
About the Course
Instructor - Courses are taught by accomplished and passionate faculty recruited from many area colleges, universities and professional forums. Each faculty member is selected for their subject area expertise and proven ability to both challenge and captivate students.
Curriculum Advisor - While instructors vary each year, the Curriculum Advisors ensure continuity in our curriculum. This course was designed by Peter Mombaur. Peter’s experience ranges from being a management consultant with McKinsey & Co. to being CEO of a telecommunications company, and most recently managing a private equity investment firm. While instructors vary, Peter’s breadth of experience adds depth to the curriculum that is taught at each of our campus locations.
