If you are considering a career in engineering, this course will help you explore facets of mechanical, structural, civil, and electrical engineering in a hands-on, minds-on approach.

In our Fundamentals of Engineering course, students will:

  • Develop 3D solutions to design challenges to learn the fundamentals behind mechanical, civil, and biomedical engineering
  • Manufacture an artificial limb to replicate natural function and movement in real world situations
  • Design and build a scale model structure compliant with code, zoning, and budget requirements

For students who enjoy both inventive and practical skills, civil engineering can be a rewarding career. Case studies will be presented to highlight the role civil engineers play in the well-being of society and a discussion of career options. 

In our Civil Engineering course, students will:

  • Explore the sub-disciplines within civil engineering: structural, transportation, construction and geotechnical.
  • Consider costs, government regulations and environmental hazards during the risk-analysis stages of a project.
  • Review case studies that highlight the role civil engineers play in society, and discuss the variety of career paths.

Mechanical Engineering

Artificial Intelligence

Cranes are machines that play a vital role in the various engineering applications and construction industry because they have enough power to move materials of various weights upward, downward and horizontally. Come explore mechanical engineering through the use of cranes at the Summer Springboard program at Cal Poly.

In our Mechanical Engineering course, students will:

  • Understand the stability conditions of the crane, determine the center of mass and pinpoint the moment of inertia.
  • Identify multiple types of cranes, and implement the standard steps of the design and manufacturing process.
  • Design and build a functioning crane, and compete to see which crane can lift the maximum weight.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are hot topics in the world of cybersecurity today.  A report from World Economic Forum (WEF) states that the growth of artificial intelligence could create 58 million net new jobs in the next few years!

In our Artificial Intelligence course, students will:

  • Use basic Python coding to unlock machine learning, and discover ultimately how it impacts our world.
  • Use tools like TensorFlow to apply probability and statistics to data sets.
  • Explore creative ways that AI is applied to data, tools and services, and actually use AI to enhance the final project.


The rapidly changing field of technology means that jobs are being created that never existed before. Meet with real-world experts, and explore a wide range of careers and academic paths for robotics and engineering majors. Excursions may include research facilities on the forefront of the latest technology innovations.

In our Robotics course, students will:

  • Work in teams to strategize, design, build and test your very own autonomous robot.
  • Move from basic programming and electronic circuit concepts to exploring each sensor’s capabilities.
  • Utilize a programming language to “train” your creation by manipulating the sensors to complete assigned tasks.


Are you fascinated by the stars? The universe is vast and mysterious and this passion can turn into a lifelong career. This summer program for high school students provides hands-on training in astronomical research, with opportunities to learn from professionals in the fields of astronomy and physics and work with state-of-the-art observational equipment.

In our Astronomy course, students will:

  • Enjoy a mix of daytime and nighttime activities to perform data collection and data interpretation.
  • Perform a research project on the Double Star system, a pair of closely-spaced stars that usually appear as a single star.
  • Work in groups to construct a scientific paper with the possibility of publishing the work via the platform.
