APIs: Understand how to use APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) so you can communicate with other websites all over the web.

Course Overview

This innovative college-level course in partnership with iXperience is perfectly designed to help high schoolers gain real world knowledge and experience before committing to a Web Development path in college. Students in this course will design and develop simple frontend web applications using HTML, CSS and Javascript. They will use GIT to version control code and collaborate with other developers on the same project. Students will also design database tables and structures, while learning to integrate with a serverless backend framework (Firebase).

They will get to design, develop and deploy a FullStack web application. While specific briefs vary from course to course, all of the projects are selected to perfectly complement the skills covered in class and enable students to make a real-world impact.

Who
Open to any high school student who will be entering freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year in Fall 2023. Space is limited. Each session is limited to 35 students per track.

How
Classes will be held via Zoom and facilitated in real-time by the instructor and a classroom coordinator.

Previous instructor and industry specialist for this course

Akhil was born in Hyderabad, India, brought up in Nairobi, Kenya and is now building a career in South Africa running two specialist web development companies. He graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) with a first-class degree in Computer Science and Information Systems as well as a postgraduate qualification.

Course Schedule
● Week 1: Students will kick off their week with an introduction to HTML & CSS, and then begin learning about and using GIT & Bootstrap. They will then finish off the week learning about DOM, AsyncJS and local storage, as well as the intricacies of APIs & Firebase.
● Week 2: In their second week, students will begin using fullstack while focusing on web design, and cloud functions. Their second week will culminate with their final presentations
