THIS IS A TWO-WEEK PROGRAM WHERE YOU’LL FOCUS ON ONE COURSE FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION.

About This Course

A dentistry program for teens in Cambridge, MA

If you’re a high school student interested in a career that blends science and healthcare, the Summer Springboard Dentistry course is the perfect place to start. This hands-on program introduces you to the fundamentals of dentistry—including dental anatomy, preventive care, and common procedures—through interactive simulations and real-world practice. You’ll gain valuable guidance from experienced dental professionals, guest speakers, and peers, all while exploring career pathways in clinical care, research, and public health.

As part of the program, students will visit Tufts Dental School and another leading dental institution in Boston. These excursions include campus tours, simulation lab experiences, admissions overviews, and Q&A panels with dental students and faculty. These immersive visits provide a behind-the-scenes look at dental education and offer practical insight into the academic and professional journey ahead. This program is a unique opportunity to explore your passion for dentistry in one of the nation’s top healthcare hubs.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

Through interactive simulations and practical exercises, students will practice basic dental techniques such as cavity preparation, tooth identification, and patient care skills. Guided by experienced dental professionals, these activities provide real-world exposure to the tools and procedures used in modern dentistry, helping students build confidence and a deeper understanding of the field.

Career Exploration

This course offers students a unique opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths within the dental field. From clinical roles like general dentistry and orthodontics to research, public health, and dental technology, students will gain insight into the many ways they can make an impact in oral healthcare. Through guest speakers, campus visits, and personal stories from professionals, participants will discover what it takes to succeed in dentistry and begin identifying the paths that align with their interests and goals.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Zea is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Departments of General Dentistry and Health Policy & Health Services Research at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and she serves as the President-Elect of the Hispanic Dental Association. Originally from Colombia, Dr. Zea earned her Doctor in Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in 1996 and completed a Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH) at Boston University School of Public Health in 2020. She is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, and an honorary faculty member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honors Society. Dr. Zea joined GSDM in 2007, where she serves as Director of Community Health Education, overseeing Community-Based and Service Learning rotations and externships for DMD students, and Director of the Applied Professional Experience (APEX) and Externship Programs. She is also Co-Director of the Comprehensive Pre-Clinical Dentistry Course and a member of the Dean’s Council on Ethics and Professionalism, Promotions, and Admissions Committees. Dr. Zea developed and implemented the comprehensive risk assessment used by students at the School Treatment Center. Her research interests focus on prevention, oral health disparities, and health services research, and she is an active member of the Hispanic Dental Association’s Core Research Team, addressing oral health disparities in the U.S. Dr. Zea is inspired by her students’ commitment to reducing oral health disparities through research, promotion, and community-based outreach activities.
