Course Overview
Our summer medical program for high school students gives you a 360 degree view of the medical and healthcare field, as well as immersive learning through hands-on projects and simulations. Students will get the unique opportunity to hop on board and learn how things really operate in the back of an ambulance. In addition, they will get behind-the-scenes access to a hospital ward room, emergency or intensive care unit room, operating room or procedural training room.
Topics you'll explore
Hands-On Learning
Previous excursions for other campuses have included a visit to the STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, Yale New Haven Hospital Emergency Department, the UCSF Zuckerberg General Hospital, the Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital and the UC San Diego School of Medicine Simulation Center. The Emergency Medicine students' excursions to the SIM labs included hands-on practice in stitching, suturing, intubation, and BLS skills led by leading medical trainers. Visits provide first-hand observations of working in a high pressure yet life-saving environment of an emergency room. Students also have the opportunity to see the inner-workings of an ambulance, with an additional opportunity for practical applications of skills learned.
Career Exploration
Throughout the program, meet a variety of experts in the field of healthcare that will provide advice and tips on academic preparation and professional pathways to explore. We will discuss the wide variety of professions within the medical field, such as physical therapy, physician's assistants, phlebotomy and more. Students will get a deeper sense of their unique motivations and aptitudes and how that aligns with potential academic and career choices. This helps students make better informed decisions about some of life’s most important choices.
