About This Course

A sports broadcasting program for teens on a university campus in Ann Arbor

Sports broadcasting is an exciting and fast-paced field that blends storytelling, analysis, and live presentation. This two-week program is ideal for students who are passionate about both sports and media and eager to explore the world of sports journalism and broadcasting.

Throughout the course, students will grasp the essentials of play-by-play and color commentary, refine their hosting abilities for television and podcasts, and gain hands-on experience calling games across various sports. They will also delve into the powerful emotional connection between fans and sports, enhancing their storytelling skills within sports media. By the program’s conclusion, students will have built the key skills needed to thrive in the sports media industry.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

This sports broadcasting program offers hands-on experience in play-by-play and color commentary, live game calling, and hosting for TV and podcasts. Students will practice reporting, conduct mock interviews, create sports news segments, and learn video and audio production basics. Through analyzing professional broadcasts, they’ll develop the storytelling and technical skills needed to succeed in sports media.

Career Exploration

This course gives students an inside look at careers in sports broadcasting through hands-on activities and real-world experiences. From visiting local sports media outlets to witnessing a live broadcast in action, students will explore various roles in the industry while building practical skills in commentary, reporting, production, and storytelling. It’s a unique opportunity to discover career paths, make industry connections, and gain a deeper understanding of sports media.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Charles Reid is an Assistant Professor of Sport Management at Adrian College, specializing in Consumer Behavior, Ethics, and Sports Media. A native of Orlando, FL, Dr. Reid earned his Ph.D. from Florida State University and brings a wealth of experience from working in soccer at every level, including Major League Soccer (MLS).

In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Dr. Reid hosts his own sports podcast, where he shares insights and engages with the latest trends in sports media.

Dr. Reid is passionate about providing students with an integrative learning experience that combines engaging lectures with hands-on opportunities. His goal is for students to leave his classes equipped with a strong understanding of the content (the “what”), the underlying theories (the “why”), and practical applications (the “how”).

Outside the classroom, Dr. Reid remains an avid sports enthusiast and continues to play soccer in his free time.
