Program Highlights

Learn conversational language such as greetings, how to order meals, and how to find an important location while you're visiting selected countries.
Be able to carry out simple communication in at least 7 languages.
Gain understanding and knowledge of the various demographics, geography (regions, cities, and key sites of interest), and interesting history for the countries students will be visiting.
Study the media representation in each country and the various messages being advertised to their cultures.
Get immersed in the cultural traditions of each country as students learn through hands-on activities from the selected countries.
Learn more about the emerging fields in this fascinating and globally-focused discipline.

Course Overview

Take a trip around the world in 9 days in this language and culture sampler course. Students will immerse themselves in the language and culture of 9 different countries. Following a brief introduction to each country, students will engage in language acquisition activities that will give them exposure to basic vocabulary and conversation skills in the language spoken in the country. Students will then “travel” to each country through videos, television programs, films, music, and other media. At the end of their visit, they will have the opportunity to utilize their newly-acquired communicative skills through interactive, Learn-by-Doing activities such as, sampling the country’s cuisine, playing a traditional game, learning a local dance, and more. Countries students may explore include: China; France (or Francophone Africa or the Caribbean; Germany; Italy; Japan; Russia; Cuba; Spain; or, Mexico.

Course Structure


There are nine 3-hour class sessions over the two-week course. During week one, students have class from 9am-12pm, Monday - Friday. During week two, students have class from 9am-12pm Monday through Thursday. Wednesday afternoons are dedicated to additional academic time (excursions, speakers).
