Yes. All dormitories have 24-hour security and use electronic keys to enter each building and individual brass keys to unlock dorm rooms. Campus security patrols around the clock and is available to assist any student in the Berkeley summer program. Your Mentor will reside on your hall floor, and other members of the Summer Springboard staff also live on campus, providing support and addressing emergencies 24 hours a day. Program leadership staff are also enrolled in Berkeley’s campus WarnMe system, an alerting and warning communication service offered by the university. The SSB team also utilizes a program-wide communication app for 24/7 team communication. Berkeley employs Emergency “Blue Light” Telephone stations located around campus, which can be used to notify UCPD of the need for assistance. The residence halls use key card entries for access to front doors, elevators, and stairwells. They also have security cameras positioned on the exterior and in main lobbies (but not in other interior spaces to protect privacy). These camera feeds are recorded and reviewed in response to incidents. Berkeley also maintains on-site security staff and an on-call rotation of student and professional staff available to respond promptly when needed. UCPD maintains close relationships with neighboring city police (Berkeley, Albany, and Emeryville) to facilitate communications and emergency response. In addition to calling 9-1-1, UCPD offers a Text-to-911 service for all students, including those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have limited speech capabilities, enabling them to report emergencies via SMS text immediately.
