About This Course

A medical program for teens on a university campus in New York City

This course provides a 360 degree view of the medical and healthcare field, as well as immersive learning through hands-on projects and simulations. Students will get the unique opportunity to hop on board and learn how things really operate in the back of an ambulance. In addition, they will get behind-the-scenes access to a hospital ward room, emergency or intensive care unit room, operating room or procedural training room.

In the first week of the program, students dive into hands-on training by learning how to take vital signs, perform CPR, and apply essential wilderness medicine techniques. They’ll also visit a professional simulation lab where medical students and faculty are trained, giving them a firsthand look at how healthcare professionals build and refine their skills.

During the second week, students put their knowledge into action in a high-intensity mass casualty simulation, where they triage and stabilize patients in real-time scenarios. Through immersive, experiential learning—including team-based diagnostics and treatment planning—students explore the full scope of healthcare careers. They will spend their time developing practical skills such as suturing, splinting, bleeding control, and more and be able to get their certification in CPR.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

This program emphasizes hands-on learning through immersive simulation experiences at the STAR Center, part of Mount Sinai’s Department of Emergency Medicine. Students practice essential medical skills like stitching, suturing, intubation, and Basic Life Support (BLS) under the guidance of expert trainers. They also receive on-campus CPR and AED training, earning their certification. From exploring ambulance operations to stepping into realistic emergency scenarios, students gain practical experience that builds confidence and prepares them for real-world challenges in healthcare.

Career Exploration

Throughout the program, students will connect with a range of healthcare professionals who offer insight into academic preparation and career pathways. Through discussions and Q&A sessions, students will explore various roles in the medical field, such as physical therapy, physician assistant, phlebotomy, and more, gaining a clearer understanding of the many opportunities available. By reflecting on their interests, strengths, and goals, students can better align their personal motivations with potential academic and career paths, helping them make more informed decisions about their future.

“I was a part of the Emergency Medicine course, and I’ve found myself using the different skills that I’ve learned, even in different subjects. I’ve used suture knots in my art and bio classes. I’ve helped other people make basic decisions if something hurts based off what I learned. It was a really valuable experience.”

“The Emergency Medicine Track 100% confirmed that science is what I want to study in college, and that I want to be on the Pre-Med track. I did in fact mention the program in my application more than once. I made sure to include it in my activities section as well as two essays for two different colleges.”
