BERKELEY

Where do I stay?

Located within 2 and 3 blocks from campus, the Berkeley Residence Hall complexes consist of six buildings built around a large courtyard. These residence halls are typically inhabited by new and first-year Berkeley students when the university is in session. Living in these dorms will give your students a genuine preview of what their first year living in the residence halls might be like.

Within the residence halls, there is a central building that houses the unit office, mail services, classrooms, and an Academic Services Center. The student dorms feature double- and triple-occupancy rooms equipped with extra-long twin beds, dressers, desks, mirrors, closets, mini-fridge, microwave and complimentary high speed wireless internet. Each floor is gender-segregated with a single large communal bathroom per floor. Each bathroom is equipped with 2-3 locking stalls, 3-4 showers with locking doors, 3 sinks, a large mirror, and electrical outlets.

Do the dorms have internet?

Yes. There is free high speed wireless internet throughout campus.

Where will I be eating?

Crossroads Dining Commons is the flagship of Berkeley’s campus dining and located just a few blocks from the residence halls. Daily menus are available online. Crossroads Dining Commons features many distinct dining options and features 10 stations that serve a variety of eats like pho, pizza, deli, salad bar and more. Students are strongly encouraged to look at posted signage and allergen labels placed on menu items for any food allergies or other dietary restrictions (if in doubt, Berkeley’s Dining team members are available to answer any questions.) Crossroads Dining Commons serves breakfast and dinner every weekday; and breakfast on the weekends. Lunch will come in the form of funds pre-loaded onto a lunch meal card, which the students can use to buy lunch at any on-campus restaurants within SSB’s campus boundary. Residential students (and commuters students who purchase an optional add-on package) will enjoy weekend lunches and dinners off campus.

Students may order food to be delivered to the dorm at their own expense, via DoorDash or UberEats for example, but it can only be received during free time or meal periods and must arrive prior to end-of-night room checks.

Will I have access to recreational and exercise facilities?

Berkeley Residence halls have a small exercise facility with a number of treadmills, recumbent bikes, stair machine, and various Cybex and Life Fitness exercise equipment in the central building available for student use. Unfortunately, students will not be allowed to use Berkeley recreational facilities as they are all being used by Berkeley’s own summer sports programs.

Can I do laundry in the dorms?

Yes, all students will have access to laundry facilities located within the residence halls. Laundry rooms equipped with washers and dryers are located in all Berkeley residence hall buildings. The locations of laundry rooms in residence halls are posted in the lobby near the main entrance to each building. Each load costs approximately $1.50 for the wash and $1.25 for the dryer. Students may use the CSCPay Mobile app (download Apple CSCPay Mobile app or Android CSCPay Mobile app) or pay with credit or debit card.

Do rooms have air conditioning?

The residence halls do not have air conditioning. However, during the summer there are relatively mild temperatures in Berkeley, and many students open windows at night to stay cool. In July, average temperatures at Berkeley are between a low of 53 F and a high of 73.9 F. You will want to pack light layers of clothing because you may actually get cold. If the temperatures get warm, Summer Springboard will have a small inventory of individual fans available in the office for students to check out. Please be sure to consult the recommended student packing list.

Do I need to bring my own bedding or towels?

No. Beds are made prior to arrival with university issued pillow, pillow case, sheets, blanket, and bedspread. Two towels (basic standard sized), a face cloth, and small bars of soap (soap bars are set out in a caddy in the bathroom) are provided. Linens and towels are changed weekly. However, please feel free to bring your own preferred bedding as well! After the first week of the program, students will need to deposit their dirty linens in the bins located on each floor. New linens for each occupant in the room will be placed outside the door. Extra pillows, blankets, and bedspreads are available to exchange at each unit front desk, if needed.

What kind of excursions will we go on?

Students may take one or two academic excursions that are aligned with the academic objectives of their program. During the weekend in the middle of the program, residential (and commuter, optionally with an additional fee) students will take a tour of San Francisco on Saturday and will go to California’s Great America on Sunday. During the week, students will also ride the San Francisco Ferry to the historic Ferry Building.

Are the dorms safe?

Yes. All dormitories have 24-hour security and use electronic fobs to enter each locked building and operate the interior elevator as well as the door to the stairwell. Individual brass keys are then used to open the dorm rooms. UCPD campus security is on 24-hour patrol and available to any student that may need assistance during the Berkeley summer program. The campus also offers Blue Light telephone stations that are located throughout campus. In addition to calling 9-1-1, Berkeley also supports a Text-to-911 for all students, including those in need of this type of accommodation.  Your Mentor will live in your hall on the same floor to provide support to students. Other members of the Summer Springboard staff, including the Campus Director and Assistant Campus Director, also reside in the residence hall and are available to support students and tackle emergencies, 24 hours a day.

Can I receive mail or packages while on the program?

It is generally very slow to get packages to students due to lowered summer mailroom staffing, and for this reason mailing packages is discouraged. However, if there are items that you urgently need while you are on program, you may either request to be taken by a mentor or in group of 3 to a nearby retail store (pharmacy, grocery store, etc) within boundaries during free time, or you may utilize the Amazon Hubs located either in the ASUC Student Union in the MLK Jr. Building, or in Unit 1, 2650 Durant Ave, Berkeley, CA 94720.
