Summer Springboard
Environmental Engineering
ON THE CAMPUS OF UC SAN DIEGO

HANDS-ON APPROACHES TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
THIS IS A TWO-WEEK PROGRAM WHERE YOU’LL FOCUS ON ONE COURSE FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION.
Environmental Engineering at UC San Diego
- Explore key environmental challenges and discover impactful engineering solutions for a sustainable future.
- Learn how engineers deliver clean water using methods like filtration, desalination, and recycling.
- Understand air pollution, greenhouse gases, and strategies to improve air quality.
- Examine waste reduction strategies, including upcycling and circular economy principles.
- Investigate renewable energy sources and their integration into sustainable infrastructure.
- Apply systems thinking in a hands-on capstone project that integrates water, air, waste, and energy solutions through team design and prototyping.

Environmental Engineering
About This Course
The Environmental Engineering at UC San Diego program supports high school students in exploring diverse medical careers through a two-week pre-college experience.
This course introduces students to the innovative field of environmental engineering through hands-on experiments, team design challenges, and field-based learning. Students will explore how engineers tackle today’s most urgent environmental issues, such as clean water, renewable energy, waste reduction, air quality, and sustainable cities.
Set in San Diego’s unique environmental landscape, students will apply core engineering principles to a final project: designing and prototyping a sustainable solution to an environmental challenge of their choice. Along the way, they’ll build critical thinking and collaboration skills while gaining insight into how environmental engineers drive a more sustainable future.
TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE
Hands-on Learning
Hands-on learning is at the heart of this course. Each day, students move beyond theory to actively experiment, build, and test solutions to real environmental challenges. They’ll construct mini water filters, track local air quality, and upcycle materials into functional prototypes. Renewable energy concepts come alive as students design and test solar-powered devices, while hydrology principles are explored through experiments comparing runoff on different surfaces.
The capstone project pushes students to apply all of these skills in a team-based design challenge: creating and testing a prototype that provides a sustainable solution. Working in groups, they’ll model real-world engineering solutions and refine their designs through iterative testing. This active, project-driven approach ensures that students not only understand environmental engineering concepts, but also experience the creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving that define the field.
Career Exploration
This course gives students a window into the diverse careers that shape a sustainable future, from water resource engineering to renewable energy, waste management, and climate solutions. Through hands-on projects, field experiences, and interactions with real-world case studies, students will see how environmental engineers and sustainability professionals turn big challenges into innovative opportunities.
