BLOG POST FOR JUNE 30

It’s been an incredible first week with Summer Springboard on campus at Yale University! Our students have hit the ground running, diving into hands-on projects, real-world excursions, and expert-led experiences across every course.

Here’s a look at what each group has been up to:

Forensic Science: Investigating at the Henry C. Lee Institute 

  • Our Forensic Science students spent two full days immersed in the world of real investigators at the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science.
  • On Monday, students split into three groups to investigate a mock crime scene. Working just like real forensic investigators, they carefully examined the scene, documented evidence through notes, sketches, and photographs, and began piecing together what had happened.
  • On Tuesday, students shifted their focus to Forensic Biology, exploring how investigators collect and analyze biological evidence from clothing and other materials. They dove into methods of body fluid identification with an emphasis on blood evidence, and learned about the presumptive and confirmatory tests used to detect it. They also discovered how DNA testing plays a vital role in modern forensic investigations. To put their new skills to the test, students returned to their mock crime scenes to examine evidence for fingerprints and bloodstains, applying the same techniques used by professionals in the field.

Fundamentals of Engineering: Building, Wiring, and Designing for the Real World

  • Engineering students had a packed week from day one. They kicked off with a computational bridge analysis, followed by a hands-on spaghetti bridge building challenge that put structural design principles to the test.
  • Students then applied their knowledge of circuitry and biomedical engineering to build motorized prosthetic hands, learning to wire and program Arduino microcontrollers to control the hand’s motor, a project that bridges engineering and real-world medical innovation.
  • The week also featured guest expert Raul Garcia, who led students through the process of designing community-scale solar installations. Students explored not just the technical side of solar design, but the real-world constraints engineers face every day, including local and federal zoning requirements, regulatory approval processes, and the funding mechanisms that make large-scale renewable energy projects possible.

FinTech: From Wall Street to Boston

  • FinTech students have been exploring the full landscape of financial markets, from public equities and bonds to private equity and private credit. A core theme of the course is the essential role technology plays across every market and how Wall Street has evolved into what we now call FinTech. Students are learning how each market works, how they influence one another, and how technology is reshaping the industry.
  • They will also head to Boston to visit the Museum of American Finance, take in the beauty of the Seaport District, and enjoy some delicious New England food!

Pre-MBA: Behind the Scenes of Supply Chain at Fosdick

  • Pre-MBA students took their learning off campus with an excursion to Fosdick Fulfillment, a leading third-party logistics (3PL) company based just outside New Haven. Students got a firsthand look at how a modern supply chain operation runs, from warehousing and inventory management to order fulfillment and shipping for major retail and e-commerce brands. The visit gave students valuable insight into the operational side of business that powers everything from small startups to national retailers, a perfect complement to the strategic and analytical concepts they’re exploring in the classroom.

Surgery: CPR & First Aid Certification

  • Our Surgery students completed their CPR and First Aid Certification this week, gaining hands-on experience with essential emergency response skills. Students practiced CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, and basic first aid, while learning how to assess scene safety, recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest, and respond appropriately under pressure. This training builds both competence and confidence, preparing students to act decisively in critical moments and laying a strong foundation for their future careers in healthcare.

 Pediatrics: Behind the Scenes at the XR Pediatrics Lab

  • Pediatrics students visited the XR Pediatrics Lab under the direction of Dr. Asher Marks, where students explored how extended reality (XR) technology is transforming pediatric care and medical training.

It’s only Week 1, and our students are already getting an incredible glimpse into their future fields through expert mentorship, hands-on projects, and real-world experiences. Stay tuned for more updates as the summer continues!

Students at Yale are nearing the end of their unforgettable Summer Springboard experience!

What an incredible journey it has been on campus. After a week filled with hands-on academic courses, inspiring afternoon activities, and exciting weekend excursions, our students are getting ready to complete an unforgettable Summer Springboard program. Along the way, they explored new ideas, pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones, and formed friendships that will continue long after the program ends.

Throughout their time on campus, students gained valuable insight into their academic interests and future career goals while reflecting on the kind of learners and professionals they aspire to become. From engaging classroom discussions to meaningful real-world experiences beyond campus, this summer has been a time of growth, discovery, and building a strong foundation for the future.

We’re incredibly proud of all they’ve achieved and look forward to seeing where their journeys lead next. Here’s to new beginnings and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead!
