About This Course
A medical program for teens on a university campus in San Diego
The past few years have underscored just how vital emergency care professionals—doctors, nurses, EMTs, and first responders—are to society. Emergency room nurses earn between $77,000 and $107,000 annually, with top salaries reaching $124,500.
Whether you’re aiming to become an EMT, paramedic, ER doctor, ICU nurse, or pursue another emergency care role, the Summer Springboard Emergency Medicine course at UCSD provides a strong foundation.
Through hands-on activities and realistic simulations, students will learn essential skills like first aid, wound care, bleeding control, splinting, suturing, and patient extraction. They’ll also practice triaging emergencies and managing high-stress scenarios.
Participants will analyze a simulated patient’s history, develop diagnoses and treatment plans, and ultimately respond to a mass-disaster scenario—gaining experience in decision-making under pressure and applying real-world medical techniques.
TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE
Hands-on Learning
Learn basic medical skills and get training on how to handle situations when medical care is not immediately available. Simulations will allow students to learn and practice hands-on medical techniques including positioning and extraction, wound care, control of bleeding, stitches and sutures, usage of splints and slings, and other useful potentially life-saving skills. In small groups, students in a simulated medical team will be required to research the patient’s history and symptoms, create a diagnosis based on their findings, and develop a treatment plan.
Career Exploration
Throughout the program, meet a variety of experts in the field of healthcare that will provide advice and tips on academic preparation and professional pathways to explore. We will discuss the wide variety of professions within the medical field, such as physical therapy, physician’s assistants, phlebotomy and more. Students will get a deeper sense of their unique motivations and aptitudes and how that aligns with potential academic and career choices. This helps students make better informed decisions about some of life’s most important choices.

“I was a part of the Emergency Medicine course, and I’ve found myself using the different skills that I’ve learned, even in different subjects. I’ve used suture knots in my art and bio classes. I’ve helped other people make basic decisions if something hurts based off what I learned. It was a really valuable experience.”

“The Emergency Medicine Track 100% confirmed that science is what I want to study in college, and that I want to be on the Pre-Med track. I did in fact mention the program in my application more than once. I made sure to include it in my activities section as well as two essays for two different colleges.”
