About This Course
Explore the building blocks of life in this hands-on introduction to human genetics on the University of Michigan campus.
Students will discover how DNA determines traits, investigate the biology behind genetic disorders, and examine how genetics connects to medicine, technology, and society. Through interactive labs, simulations, and case studies, they’ll analyze genetic data, explore inheritance patterns, and debate the ethical dimensions of cutting-edge genetic research.
Participants gain real laboratory experience through bacterial transformation, genetic engineering, and bioinformatics. By designing experiments, interpreting data, and investigating gene sequences, students uncover how scientists decode DNA. The course also highlights diverse career paths, from biomedical research and genetic counseling to healthcare, pharmaceuticals and public health, showing how a foundation in genetics leads to impactful, real-world applications.
TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE
Hands-on Learning
Students gain real laboratory experience through techniques such as bacterial transformation, genetic engineering, and more. They’ll design experiments, analyze data and apply bioinformatics tools to investigate gene sequences, learning how scientists uncover the mysteries of DNA.
Career Exploration
Throughout the course, students gain valuable insight into the wide range of careers connected to genetics and biotechnology. From biomedical research and genetic counseling to healthcare, pharmaceuticals and public health, participants will learn how foundational knowledge in genetics applies to real-world professions and emerging scientific fields.
