About This Course
A medical program for teens on a university campus in Atlanta
This immersive emergency medicine program offers students the opportunity to develop essential hands-on medical skills such as suturing, placing splints, stopping bleeding, taking vital signs, and performing CPR. In the first week, students will explore wilderness medicine techniques and train in a state-of-the-art simulation lab used by healthcare students and faculty. Through team-based activities, participants will begin diagnosing and treating simulated patients, gaining valuable exposure to real-world medical scenarios while learning the foundational theory behind each skill.
In the second week, students will put their knowledge to the test in a high-pressure mass casualty incident simulation, where they will triage and stabilize victims. The program provides a comprehensive, 360-degree view of the medical and healthcare field through experiential learning, team collaboration, and guided instruction. Along the way, students gain insight into diverse educational and career paths, building a strong foundation for future studies in medicine and healthcare.
TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE
Hands-on Learning
Learn basic medical skills and get training on how to handle situations when medical care is not immediately available. Simulations will allow you to learn and practice hands-on medical techniques including positioning and extraction, wound care, control of bleeding, stitches and sutures, usage of splints and slings, and other useful potentially life-saving skills. In small groups, your medical team will be required to research the patient’s history and symptoms, create a diagnosis based on your findings, and develop a treatment plan.
Career Exploration
Through hands-on activities and real-world simulations, students will explore a wide range of careers in medicine and healthcare. They’ll gain insight into roles such as doctors, nurses, EMTs, surgeons, and medical researchers, while learning about the education and training each path requires. This experience helps students discover their interests and better understand the many opportunities available in the healthcare field.

“I was a part of the Emergency Medicine course, and I’ve found myself using the different skills that I’ve learned, even in different subjects. I’ve used suture knots in my art and bio classes. I’ve helped other people make basic decisions if something hurts based off what I learned. It was a really valuable experience.”

“The Emergency Medicine Track 100% confirmed that science is what I want to study in college, and that I want to be on the Pre-Med track. I did in fact mention the program in my application more than once. I made sure to include it in my activities section as well as two essays for two different colleges.”
