About This Course
As future changemakers, students will jump into the world of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through hands-on activities and real-world challenges. They’ll explore the 17 existing goals, uncover how the United Nations tackles global issues, and investigate why these goals matter both globally and within their own communities. Through simulations, role-playing, group challenges, and creative problem-solving, students will work together to design Goal 18—a brand-new SDG for the future. By testing ideas, debating solutions, and presenting their work, students build confidence, collaboration, and critical thinking skills while stepping into the role of young leaders shaping a better world.
Through hands-on interactions with social impact leaders, including a former national officer and representatives from the International Rescue Committee, students gain a front-row view of how changemakers create real-world impact. Visits to environmental and community organizations, combined with exposure to global sustainability initiatives, provide students with insight into careers in international relations, diplomacy, environmental science, policy, and nonprofit leadership. Participants learn the skills and strategies needed to drive meaningful change both locally in NYC and around the world.
TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE
Hands-on Learning
Students participate in simulations of UN negotiations, crisis role-plays, and debates, while creating mock treaties and flags for their own student-run United Nations. They design solutions to global problems, build community action plans, and develop a final SDG proposal to present at the Global Summit. Activities emphasize teamwork, research, and practical problem-solving skills.
