About This Course
A nursing program for teens on a university campus in North Carolina
Nursing is the largest, most diverse, and highly respected healthcare profession. With employment expected to grow by 9% by 2030, especially after the pandemic, more students are considering nursing as a rewarding career. Nurses play a vital role in providing both primary healthcare and specialized services to individuals, families, and communities.
During this Summer Springboard program, students will explore various nursing career opportunities and gain insight into a typical day in the life of a nurse. They will learn fundamental concepts of caring, engage with guest speakers who share real-world experiences, and participate in hands-on simulations. Past field trips have included visits to the Emory Simulation Lab, Durham College Simulation Lab, and the Community Health Lab at Durham Tech.
TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE
Hands-on Learning
This program combines essential knowledge with practical experience. Students explore key concepts like anatomy, communication, physiology, and public health promotion, while developing skills in research and evidence-based practice. The program emphasizes critical thinking, helping students apply theory to real-world situations, strengthen decision-making, and build leadership abilities. Through nursing simulations and interactive experiences—such as visits to simulation labs and community health centers—students gain valuable, hands-on insight into the day-to-day work of nurses.
Career Exploration
This nursing program offers students a chance to learn about the many paths within this diverse and respected profession. As the demand for nurses grows, students will discover various roles nurses play in providing primary and specialized care to individuals and communities. Through guest speakers, discussions, and real-world experiences, students gain insight into what a typical day looks like and explore the wide range of opportunities available in nursing. This exploration helps students find their passion and prepare for a meaningful, impactful career in healthcare.
