Academic Courses

Architecture

Are you considering a future in architecture or design? Whether you’re preparing your college application and portfolio or simply curious about the profession, the Summer Springboard Architecture course for high school students is a great place to start. You’ll explore core architectural concepts, design principles, and creative problem-solving in a collaborative studio environment.

Through a hands-on design project, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the academic path to becoming an architect, what the day-to-day work involves, and the diverse career opportunities in the field. It’s an ideal way to experience what studying and practicing architecture is really like.

Business & Entrepreneurship

Summer Springboard’s Business & Entrepreneurship program at Barnard College immerses students in the core principles of launching and growing a business. In the first class, students are divided into teams and tasked with developing an original business idea. Throughout the program, they refine this idea into a fully developed business, which they will eventually pitch to potential investors. As part of this process, teams create a marketing plan and financial projections to support their venture.

This hands-on, experiential learning approach keeps students actively engaged, allowing them to apply theoretical concepts in real-time as they build their business. The instructor introduces key principles as challenges arise, guiding students through practical problem-solving. On the final day, teams present their finished products to a panel of expert judges who offer valuable professional feedback.

Emergency Medicine

Our summer medical program for high school students offers a comprehensive, 360-degree view of the medical and healthcare field. Through immersive learning experiences, students engage in hands-on projects and realistic simulations that deepen their understanding of the profession. This approach allows participants to explore various facets of healthcare beyond the classroom.

Students will also have the unique opportunity to experience what happens behind the scenes in real medical settings. They can hop on board an ambulance to see firsthand how emergency care operates, and gain exclusive access to hospital environments such as ward rooms, emergency or intensive care units, operating rooms, and procedural training rooms. This inside look provides invaluable insight into the day-to-day realities of healthcare professionals.

Fashion Merchandising

Uncover your passion for fashion and explore a world of career possibilities in some of the globe’s most iconic fashion capitals. Famed for their historic fashion events, top-tier designers, and vibrant style scenes, these cities are more than destinations—they’re living classrooms that offer an immersive journey into the heart of the fashion industry.

Throughout the program, students dive into the business side of fashion, gaining valuable insights from seasoned industry professionals. Inspired by Steve Madden, they’ll explore key topics like consumer behavior and fashion forecasting, leading up to the creation of original design concepts. The experience culminates with a showcase of their innovative Steve Madden bag designs at the brand’s NYC headquarters, where one standout creation will be awarded a special prize.

Finance & Investing

In this course, students will gain hands-on experience building a diverse portfolio of stocks, bonds, and options while participating in a fast-paced, team-based trading competition. Collaboration and real-time decision-making are central to the experience, as faculty provide expert guidance to help students navigate the world of investing. Along the way, students will explore key financial concepts such as asset classes, public vs. private equity, stock market mechanics, company analysis, valuation methods, and portfolio design.

Beyond the classroom, participants can look forward to exciting excursions, including a behind-the-scenes tour of Wall Street in New York City. Last summer, students visited a professional trading room equipped with Bloomberg terminals and heard insights from experienced financial advisors. Designed to both educate and inspire, this course offers a real-world glimpse into the fast-moving world of finance.

Future Educator

Great teaching has the power to change lives and it all begins with learning. The Future Educator program gives high school students an inside look at the teaching profession, blending the art and science behind how people learn.

Through interactive lessons, hands-on projects, and real-world examples, students will explore what makes teachers effective, how to design engaging lessons, and how to create learning spaces that inspire curiosity and growth. Whether you’re drawn to the classroom, youth development, or shaping the future of education through policy, this program is a strong first step toward a meaningful and impactful career.

Generative AI & Machine Learning

Explore the future of technology with a two-week AI program for high school students, set in the heart of New York City. This immersive experience introduces cutting-edge topics like machine learning, large language models, and neural networks, while building foundational skills in Python, data analysis, and visualization using tools like pandas and TensorFlow.

Students will tackle real-world projects, create their own machine learning models, and dive into the ethical questions surrounding AI. Beyond the classroom, NYC excursions offer an inside look at the city’s vibrant tech scene with visits to startups, innovation labs, and major tech companies.

Neuroeconomics

Why do people make the choices they do? Neuroeconomics explores this question by combining neuroscience, psychology, and economics to better understand human decision-making. This course dives into how the brain influences behavior, offering students a unique lens through which to examine everyday choices.

Through interactive labs, discussions, and group projects, students gain practical experience in designing experiments and analyzing behavioral data. By the end of the program, they’ll see how neuroeconomics applies to real-world situations in business, policy, and social initiatives.

Psychology & Neuroscience

Through psychology simulations and hands-on neurology workshops, you’ll explore how the brain influences human behavior. Whether you’re drawn to the physical workings of the brain and nervous system or fascinated by the complexities of thought and behavior, you’ll engage with professionals who specialize in both psychology and neuroscience.

Past excursions have included exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences, such as visiting the NYU Psychology Lab to observe an fMRI machine in action and participate in research studies. Students have also explored the Alvarado Lab, gaining insights into biology and interacting with live animals. Guest speakers have featured experts from institutions like Harvard, UCLA, and Google.
