Fundamentals of Medicine
About This Course
Before a physician specializes in hearts, bones or brains, they learn to do the same few things well: listen to a patient, read the body’s signals and reason toward a diagnosis. Medicine now includes dozens of specialties, many of which students have never heard of, such as interventional radiology, palliative care and sports medicine. The field keeps shifting as AI-assisted imaging, gene therapies and telehealth change how care is delivered. This course is built for students who are curious about medicine but haven’t yet decided where they fit, and no prior experience is needed. Students build the clinical foundation every specialty shares while meeting physicians, residents and medical students who describe what their work actually looks like. In one week, they leave with a clearer sense of which areas of medicine interest them most. For students who want to keep going, it’s also the ideal first step into specialty courses such as Surgery, Cardiology, Pediatrics and Cancer Research & Therapeutics in later sessions.
TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE
Hands-on Learning
Students earn CPR and First Aid certification, take vital signs and work through realistic patient cases, all designed so beginners can jump right in. They also learn how research shapes every area of medicine and investigate a medical question of their own with support from current medical students.
Career Exploration
Through conversations with physicians, residents and medical students across specialties, students see what different medical careers look like day to day and how research plays a part in every one of them. It’s an ideal starting point for students who know they’re interested in medicine but aren’t sure where to begin.
