Constitutional Law

About This Course

Just steps away from one of the most beautiful law schools in the country, Constitutional Law at Michigan puts students at the center of the debates shaping the country today. Students learn how the Constitution divides power, how cases reach the Supreme Court and how justices decide them. Through landmark cases and the ones making the headlines today, they explore rights such as, free speech, privacy, equal protection and the rights of the accused. Students play scenario games, run a separation-of-powers simulation, role-play real world encounters and draft their own constitutional amendment. Along the way, they will visit a court house and hear from attorneys who argue constitutional cases. The course ends with a mock Supreme Court argument where students argue both sides of a case before a panel of “justices”.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

Students brief real Supreme Court decisions, apply the Bill of Rights and other amendments to real-life scenarios, debate today’s headline cases, and draft and vote on their own amendment. Working in teams on a mock case, they write a legal brief and argue it before a panel of “justices.”

Career Exploration

Students explore careers in constitutional law, including appellate attorney, civil rights and civil liberties lawyer, government attorney, judge, law clerk, legislative counsel, policy analyst and law professor. They map out the path from college through law school and the bar exam, and reflect on how their own interests and strengths fit their academic and career goals.
