About This Course

Just steps away from one of the most beautiful law schools in the country, Criminal Law at the University of Michigan puts students inside the criminal justice system from the very first class, following a case from start to finish. They will learn what makes an act a crime, how police investigations are limited by the Constitution, and why most cases end in a plea deal rather than a trial. Students will investigate a mock crime scene, negotiate plea agreements, debate landmark cases, and argue a motion to suppress evidence. The course ends with a final case where students argue a suppression hearing and trial before a judge.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

Students work a criminal case from start to finish. They decide what charges to bring, test whether a search followed the Fourth Amendment, collect and log evidence at a mock crime scene, and negotiate a plea deal. The course ends with a final case where students serve as prosecutors, defense attorneys, witnesses, and judges.

Career Exploration

Students explore careers across the justice system. They map out the path from college through law school and the bar exam, and reflect on how their own interests and strengths fit their academic and career goals.
