Academic Courses

AI Design & Media

This course introduces students to AI-generated art by exploring the collaboration between human creativity and machine intelligence. Through daily hands-on practice with text-to-image tools, students develop their unique artistic voice while learning the full creative workflow, from concept to final artwork. Emphasizing a “call and response” approach with AI, the course encourages critical reflection on how technology can enhance, rather than replace, human artistry. By the end, students will have started a portfolio of original AI art, deepened their understanding of emerging technologies, and explored career paths in digital art, creative tech, AI ethics, and cultural design.

Architecture

Are you considering a career in architecture or design? Are you working on your college application and portfolio? Or are you simply curious about what it is like to be an architect?

The Summer Springboard architecture course for high school students introduces architectural ideas, design principles, and methods of exploring problems of the built environment in a collaborative studio setting. While working on a design project you will learn about the academic path to an architectural degree, the day-to-day work of an architect, and the career opportunities.

Astrophysics

If you’re curious about how the universe was formed and the mysteries it holds, our Astrophysics program in Berkeley offers an exciting two-week exploration into one of science’s most expansive fields. You’ll build a strong foundation in key concepts, engage in hands-on projects, analyze real astronomical data, and participate in observational activities that bring complex ideas to life. Alongside developing critical thinking and research skills, you’ll also explore career paths in space exploration, research, engineering, and more—gaining insight into how astrophysics connects with technology, climate science, and innovation.

Biotechnology

Students in Biotech in Berkeley will explore environmental biotechnology and the discovery of antibiotics from soil microbes. Through hands-on labs, they’ll isolate and test soil microbes, learn modern laboratory techniques, and discover how artificial intelligence is transforming scientific research.

They’ll also dive into the CRISPR Revolution, retracing the steps of scientists who developed this groundbreaking gene-editing tool. By working with fluorescent proteins and sophisticated lab tools, students will apply CRISPR at a molecular level, collect samples, and analyze data to better understand its real-world applications.

Business & Entrepreneurship

Students will learn firsthand from business veterans about starting and running a business. Throughout the program, they’ll create a plan for a new venture, meet leaders from different areas of business and finance, and pitch their ideas to real-world investors.

Last summer in Berkeley, students visited Bay Area businesses like Netflix, Autodesk Gallery, and Maker Nexus. They also attended an inspiring career panel featuring CEOs, producers, and entrepreneur consultants who shared valuable insights on building a successful entrepreneurial journey.

Design Thinking & Rapid Prototyping

This course will introduce students to 3D CAD design and fast prototyping using a 3D printer that they will make to take home with them. Students will learn how to design products using Autodesk Fusion360 and then build a Creality Ender Pro V2 3D printer.

Students will also learn how to use the 3D printer for fast prototyping, review, and improvements of their designs. The course will cover the principles of 3D CAD design, including design methodology, geometric modeling, and assembly modeling. Students will also learn the fundamentals of 3D printing, including how to select and maintain a 3D printer, materials, and printing techniques.

Ecology & Environmental Science

The Ecology & Environmental Science course combines natural and social sciences to address complex environmental challenges. Integrating biology, chemistry, ecology, policy, economics, and psychology, it helps students understand humanity’s impact on the environment and explore careers focused on mitigating that impact.

Students will examine how climate change, ecosystems, pollution, agriculture, and human health are interconnected, while also exploring environmental justice. The course blends theory with real-world learning through case studies and field trips to local habitat restoration sites and botanical gardens.

Economics

Discover how individuals, businesses, and governments decide how to use limited resources in a world of unlimited wants and needs. Explore the impact of economic issues like taxes, inflation, interest rates, wealth inequality, emerging markets, and energy and environmental challenges.

The Economics course offers a framework to understand how our world works, from daily personal choices to the strategies businesses and governments use to reach their goals.

Emergency Medicine

Our summer medical program for high school students offers a comprehensive view of the healthcare field through hands-on projects and immersive simulations. Students gain valuable insights into medical practices and explore a variety of career paths in healthcare.

In past years, students visited the KANBAR Simulation Center at UCSF to experience realistic medical scenarios and toured Berkeley Fire Department #3, meeting EMT staff to learn about emergency response careers. They also completed the requirements to earn their Red Cross Adult & Child CPR certification, adding practical skills to their experience.

Fundamentals of Engineering

Engineering is one of the most in-demand careers, with companies constantly seeking creative minds who can solve problems, save costs, and help drive innovation. This course offers students an engaging, hands-on introduction to the field, covering mechanical, structural, civil, and electrical engineering to help them discover what it truly takes to be an engineer.

As part of the experience, students will visit the TESLA Fremont Factory to see large-scale engineering in action, as well as Circuit Launch, an innovative shared space for electronics, prototyping, and additive manufacturing that showcases the cutting edge of design and technology.

Generative AI & Machine Learning

Discover how data shapes the world in our Data Science & Machine Learning course, where you’ll learn to use Python and powerful tools like pandas, matplotlib, and seaborn to bring raw numbers to life. Through hands-on projects, you’ll explore real-world datasets, uncover patterns, and apply statistical reasoning to make sense of complex information.

You’ll also take your skills further by building machine learning models and even creating a basic neural network with Keras or TensorFlow. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the ethical side of AI, considering fairness, bias, and the social impact of technology—preparing you to think critically as well as technically.

Neurobiology

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to neurobiology and the interdisciplinary study of the brain and nervous system. Students will explore how the nervous system controls thought, action, and emotion through lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities, covering molecules, cells, and circuits that influence behavior.

They will study developmental processes, brain injury, and disease while gaining a broad understanding of neurobiological principles. The course also highlights diverse career opportunities in fields like academic research, biotechnology, drug discovery, clinical medicine, biomedical engineering, and neuroinformatics.

Nursing

Nursing is the largest, the most diverse, and one of the most respected of all healthcare professions. Nursing employment is expected to increase by 9% by 2030, post-pandemic, progressively more students have been considering this career path.

Nurses are responsible for providing primary health care and specialty services to individuals, families, and communities. Discover the diverse career opportunities and what a day in the life of a nurse looks like. During the program, students will learn the fundamental concepts of caring and gain an interesting perspective on how patient care is provided.

Pediatrics

Does your budding physician have an interest in diagnosing, treating, and caring for adolescents, children, and infants? Pediatricians are trained to diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases and injuries for children from infancy to young adulthood. While they perform many similar tasks to that of a general physician, pediatricians are specially trained in diagnosing and treating problems specific to young patients.

In this program, students will explore the specialty field of pediatric medicine. They will practice conducting patient physical examinations, triaging pediatric emergency and hospital medicine cases, taking patient histories, and get infant and adolescent CPR/AED certified.

Physics & Quantum Computing

Quantum computing, once science fiction, is poised to transform technology in the next decade, with Berkeley leading a multi-university institute focused on advancing the field and training its future workforce. Major companies like IBM, Google, Microsoft, and Intel are developing powerful quantum processors, while local innovators like Rigetti and Atom Computing drive progress in the Bay Area.

This course provides students with essential quantum knowledge, covering core concepts like superposition and entanglement. Designed by top academic and industry experts, the curriculum explores quantum phenomena and their real-world applications, preparing students for this cutting-edge technology.

Pre-Med

Are you considering a future in medicine, but unsure about your specific path? Dive into an engaging program designed to help you explore the diverse options within the medical field. Throughout this course, students will gain firsthand exposure to a range of medical specialties, including cardiology, radiology, orthopedics, and more.

You’ll also hear about the intricacies of entering medical school, preparing for entrance exams, planning your medical residency, and the vital role of scientific inquiry and curiosity in your journey to becoming a medical professional. Interact with experienced doctors, medical students, and residents while immersing yourself in the multifaceted world of medicine.

Psychology & Neuroscience

Through psychology simulations and hands-on neurology workshops, you will explore the connections between the brain and human behavior. Whether focused on the brain’s physical functions or the thought processes behind behavior, you’ll engage with professionals experienced in both psychology and neuroscience.

As part of the program, students will visit the Cognitive Psychophysiology Lab at SFSU and attend a talk by a distinguished guest speaker from the psychology field.

Surgery

Explore the world of surgery through this hands-on program designed for students considering medical careers. You’ll learn fundamental surgical concepts, practice basic skills like suturing using training models, and participate in simulation exercises that develop decision-making and teamwork. Gain insight into surgical careers, training pathways, and specialties such as general surgery, orthopedics, and minimally invasive procedures, all while receiving mentorship from practicing surgeons to help determine if a surgical path aligns with your goals.

Trial Law

The Trial Law program in Berkeley immerses high school students in the legal field through interactive sessions, hands-on skill-building, and excursions to places like law firms, law schools, or Bay Area courtrooms. Students practice researching evidence, delivering arguments, examining witnesses, and applying legal concepts, all culminating in a mock trial that offers a deeper understanding of courtroom dynamics and the legal profession.

We will explore the world-class resources of the entire region to expose you to one of the most innovative and exciting areas in the entire world.

Additionally, we’ll enjoy the fun attractions in the vicinity.

Berkeley, California

As is true in most college towns, Berkeley is the community’s arts and culture center. During your free time, you’ll have time to explore the area around downtown Berkeley. Enjoy locally-sourced inspiration wherever you turn: scenic parks, famous stages, and renowned restaurants.

California's Great America

California’s Great America is a 100-acre amusement park located in Santa Clara. The park has appeared in 1994 films Beverly Hills Cop III and Getting Even with Dad. One of its most notable attractions, Gold Striker, has been featured as a top-ranked wooden roller coaster in Amusement Today’s annual Golden Ticket Awards publication.

San Francisco & Golden Gate Bridge

What better way to explore a city than a scavenger hunt around San Francisco. As students travel through the city, they are tasked to take photos and some famous landmarks: Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, Ghirardelli Square, and a cable car!

Course-Specific Excursions

In order to take full advantage of everything the Bay Area offers, each academic program may also take subject matter specific excursions to help round out the student experience. Previous visits have included: Google, Tesla Fremont Factor, Intel, Thermo Fisher Scientific, UC Davis Simulation & Skills Lab, UCSF KANBAR Simulation Center, Netflix, and more.

TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE

8:00am Breakfast

Enjoy breakfast with your fellow students as you get ready to start your day on-program. Most meals will be in the on-campus dining hall.

9:00am Academic Course

Take part in your selected academic course. This college-style learning experience is designed to give high school students hands-on exposure to a specific field of study.

12:00pm Lunch

Enjoy lunch in the campus dining hall, which offers a wide variety of fresh and flavorful options. The menu is designed to accommodate all kinds of dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal, and common food allergies—ensuring every student can find something satisfying and safe to eat while connecting with friends over a great meal.

1:30pm Recreational Activity or Academic Excursion

At Summer Springboard at Berkeley, academic excursions are off-campus field trips that connect directly to each course, giving students real-world insight into their chosen field. Recreational activities offer fun and social ways to unwind, explore the area, and build friendships through beach outings, campus games, local attractions, and more. Together, these experiences enrich both learning and student life in a vibrant, hands-on way.

3:00pm College Readiness Workshop or True You

At Summer Springboard in Berkeley, College Readiness Workshops help students prepare for life after high school with practical tools for navigating the college admissions process—covering topics like essay writing, interview skills, and application strategy. The True You curriculum focuses on self-discovery and personal growth, encouraging students to explore their strengths, values, and goals. Together, these sessions empower students to make confident, informed decisions about their future—academically, professionally, and personally.

5:00pm Commuter Students Depart

For those students that have selected the commuter option, they will depart campus for the day while residential students prepare for dinner and evening activities.

6:00pm Dinner

It’s been a long, eventful day! It’s time to head to the dining hall or other dining location and eat well to restore your energy reserves before taking part in clubs or other nighttime activities.

7:00pm Clubs for Residential Students

Residential students will participate in clubs or other evening activities based on the specific itinerary for the day. It’s a great way to cap off another exciting day with Summer Springboard in Berkeley!

10:30pm Dorm Checks for Residential Students

Residential students will turn in for the night to rest in their dorm rooms and get ready for the big day ahead tomorrow.

Housing

Just like a college student, students share a dorm room with roommates and use a common bathroom. Floors are gender-segregated and rooms contain an extra-long twin size bed, desks, drawers, mirror and a closet.

Your Summer Springboard staff (mentor) will live on your hall floor to create a community, provide support, plan activities and help you get the most out of your stay. Other members of the Summer Springboard staff also live on campus and are available to support students and tackle emergencies, 24 hours a day.

Security

All dormitories have 24-hour security and use electronic keys to enter each building and dorm room. Security is on 24-hour patrol and available to any student that may need assistance during the summer program for high school students.

Facilities

Your dormitory is part of a complex of buildings around a courtyard. Each building has laundry facilities, lounges and high speed wireless internet throughout.

The program is committed to providing a healthy, smoke-free environment for students, faculty and staff. Accordingly, no smoking is permitted in student rooms or inside buildings, including lounges and balconies.

Dining

Most meals on campus will be at the local dining hall, conveniently located near our dormitory. We can accommodate diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal, or specific food allergies.
