Summer Springboard

Advanced Neuroscience

ON THE CAMPUS OF UC SAN DIEGO

DECODE THE BRAIN USING HANDS-ON ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, BRAINWAVE TRACKING AND NEURAL TECHNOLOGY AT UC SAN DIEGO.

This is a two-week program where you’ll focus on one course for the entire duration.

Advanced Neuroscience @ UC San Diego

  • Record live nerve signals using specialized electrophysiology equipment and sensor kits.
  • Dissect a sheep brain to investigate its internal structures and neural systems.
  • Experiment with a human-to-human muscle interface device to trigger motor responses between classmates.
  • Track eye movements using surface electrodes during visual challenges and optical illusions.
  • Monitor real-time brainwaves with EEG headsets to explore how the brain focuses and relaxes.
  • Present an original research project or brain-computer interface prototype at a capstone symposium.

About This Course

Neuroscience sits at the intersection of biology, computation and engineering, where mapping neural circuits drives breakthroughs in everything from brain-computer interfaces to targeted psychiatric treatments. Modern researchers decode complex electrical signals to treat neurodegenerative conditions, restore mobility through prosthetics and understand how neural networks shape human behavior. In this program, students step into the role of a neuroscientist, working with electrophysiology equipment, electroencephalography (EEG) sensors and neural modeling tools to investigate how the nervous system receives, processes and acts on information.

Designed for high school students seeking an advanced, hands-on deep dive into the brain, this course goes beyond introductory concepts to explore the cellular and computational mechanisms of neural function. Through hands-on laboratory work, brain dissections and an original capstone research project presented at a final campus symposium, participants learn how to formulate testable hypotheses and analyze real-time neural data.

Prerequisites: Students must have successfully completed AP Psychology, Honors Biology or an equivalent introductory course in psychology or life sciences prior to enrolling.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

To complement classroom learning, students explore world-class research facilities across the UC San Diego campus. Throughout these visits, students engage with university researchers, bioengineers and graduate trainees to learn how cutting-edge technology translates into discoveries in brain health and neural engineering.

Career Exploration

Through hands-on experience with computational tools, electrophysiology rigs, and neural interfacing technologies, students gain direct insight into emerging careers across neuroengineering, biotechnology, cognitive science, and clinical medicine. Additionally, interaction with researchers and graduate students highlights academic pathways and diverse professional opportunities within the rapidly growing field of neuroscience.

“I had a great time! I was able to get a lot of freedom as a rising sophomore in high school. I was able to meet people from all over the world, network and cultivate long lasting friendships. Showed a lot of interesting things about myself and future career and college plans. Thanks SSB @ UCSD!”

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Seraphina Solders (she/her) is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Neurosciences Department at UC San Diego (UCSD).

She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Biology with the Honors Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies from San Diego State University (SDSU), and her Ph.D. in Neurosciences from UCSD. Her current research focuses on the role of the blood-brain barrier in aging and its contributions to Alzheimer’s disease risk.

Broadly, she is interested in the brain changes that occur with aging and risk factors that promote neurodegeneration and cognitive decline, and her overarching goal is to improve our understanding of modifiable lifestyle factors that contribute to pathological aging so we can help our communities live long, healthy lives.

Dr. Solders has also been tutoring or teaching for as long as she has been working in research, and has experience working with high school, college, and graduate students. Currently, she teaches Foundations of Neuroimaging for psychology students at SDSU.
