Summer Springboard

Middle School Neuroscience

ON THE CAMPUS OF NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

EXPLORE THE MOST AMAZING MACHINE IN THE UNIVERSE, YOUR BRAIN, WITH A WEEK OF HANDS-ON NEUROSCIENCE IN NEW YORK CITY.

THIS IS A ONE-WEEK PROGRAM WHERE YOU’LL FOCUS ON ONE COURSE FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION.

Middle School Neuroscience

  • Build your own brain model and learn what each part of the brain does
  • Build a neuron and test how fast your nervous system really reacts.
  • Discover how your brain creates what you see, hear, taste, and touch, and why optical illusions trick it.
  • Learn how scientists study the brain, from famous case studies to EEG and brain-computer interfaces.
  • Design a helmet to protect an egg and learn how to keep your brain healthy.
  • Run your own brain experiment and present your findings during the final class.

About This Course

Every thought, feeling, and movement starts in the brain. In this one-week course in New York City, middle school students dive into neuroscience through experiments, models, and games. Students map the brain, build neurons, test their reaction times and senses, and discover how memory, sleep, and learning shape who we are. They also learn how scientists study the brain, from the strange case of Phineas Gage to technology that lets people control computers with their thoughts. The week ends with a Brain Expo, where teams present their own brain experiments to the class.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

Students build brain hats, clay brains, and neuron models, run reaction time and memory experiments, rotate through sensory stations, and design egg-drop helmets to learn about brain injury. In teams, they plan and run their own mini brain experiment and present it at the Brain Expo.

Students learn about the many people who study and care for the brain, including neuroscientists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychologists, and engineers who build brain technology, and how curiosity about the brain can lead to careers in science and medicine.
