About This Course

The Pre-Med at UC San Diego program supports high school students in exploring diverse medical careers through a two-week pre-college experience.

Are you considering a future in medicine but unsure about your specific path? Dive into an engaging program designed to help you explore the diverse options within the medical field. Throughout this course, students will gain firsthand exposure to a range of medical specialties, including cardiology, radiology, orthopedics, and more.

You’ll also learn about the intricacies of entering medical school, preparing for entrance exams, planning your medical residency, and how scientific inquiry and curiosity play a vital role in your journey to becoming a medical professional. Interact with experienced doctors, medical students, and residents while immersing yourself in the multifaceted world of medicine.

TOPICS YOU'LL EXPLORE

Hands-on Learning

Students rotate through medical specialties, practice in simulation labs, earn CPR certification, and tour real healthcare facilities to experience medical education firsthand.

Career Exploration

Through clinical rotations, research projects, and mentorship from physicians and medical trainees, students gain insight into different specialties and what it takes to succeed in medicine.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Faith C. Quenzer, DO MPH FAAEM, is a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician who graduated with a Biochemistry and Cellular Biology degree at UC San Diego, graduated from the Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) in 2015, did her Emergency Medicine residency at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California, and became a clinical research fellow for UC San Diego, Department of Emergency Medicine while earning her Master in Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at San Diego State University (SDSU). Dr. Quenzer serves as the current President of the California State Chapter of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (Cal-AAEM) and has worked and led in several interest groups and committees, such as the Women in EM, Social Emergency Medicine & Population Health, and the Latin American/Hispanic Health & Education. Dr. Faith Quenzer is an adjunct professor at the SDSU School of Public Health, where she lectures on Infectious Disease Epidemiology and has been a university guest lecturer at UCSD and CSU San Marcos. Currently, Dr. Quenzer works as a Community EM clinician in Chula Vista and Otay Mesa. She volunteers to help organize and teach bystander CPR and AED use through UCSD’s Revive and Survive Campaign and Compress and Shock Foundation. She also mentors and teaches pre-med students, medical students, and emergency medicine residents in emergency medicine. Her academic interests are in US-Mexico Border Health, Infectious Disease, and Disaster Medicine. She truly enjoys teaching any and all who are motivated to learn about emergency medicine and preventative medicine.
