EXPLORE INTERIOR DESIGN FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION WHILE ENGAGING IN INTERACTIVE SESSIONS TO DESIGN A SMALL APARTMENT

THIS IS A TWO-WEEK PROGRAM WHERE YOU’LL FOCUS ON ONE COURSE FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION.

Interior Design I @ New York School of Interior Design

  • Explore core interior design skills including drafting, color theory, floor plan interpretation, and material selection all starting with a familiar space: the home.
  • Work on real-world residential design projects, creating layouts, color schemes, and furniture plans.

  • Visit NYC design showrooms, commercial firms, and professional studios. Gain insider knowledge through guest talks with working interior designers.
  • Complete a studio-based project and earn one college credit applicable toward an undergraduate degree at NYSID or future college applications.

About This Course

A design program for teens on a university campus in New York City

Students will be introduced to core principles of interior design, including drafting, color theory, and material selection. The course takes a hands-on, practical approach by beginning with a universally relatable subject, home. Through interactive projects centered on apartment and home design, students will explore furniture placement, spatial organization, and the psychological impact of interior environments.

They will also gain a solid understanding of furniture and fabric selection, along with the skills needed to thoughtfully plan and arrange a room.

Earn College Credit: Take advantage of the opportunity to earn one college credit, which can be applied toward an undergraduate degree at NYSID or included in future college applications.

Hands-on Learning

This course emphasizes hands-on learning through real-world interior design projects focused on apartment and home spaces. Students will acquire essential skills such as drafting, interpreting floor plans, and creating cohesive design concepts using color theory and materials. By visiting design showrooms and professional studios in New York City, participants gain practical exposure to the industry. The course culminates in designing a NYC apartment, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a tangible, creative project while earning college credit.

Career Exploration

This course offers a valuable introduction to the world of interior design, helping students explore potential career paths in the field. Through studio work, visits to professional design firms and showrooms, and guest talks from industry experts, students gain first-hand insight into the day-to-day life of interior designers. By engaging in real-world projects and learning professional practices, participants can better understand whether a future in interior design is right for them.

Interior Design I

Meet Your Instructor

Lynette Bard found her way into interior design after careers as a fashion designer in NYC, an art teacher in Hong Kong, and a full-time mom. Lynette is a Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) and a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). She holds National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certificate #36002. She is a faculty member at the New York School of Interior Design.

Christine Ortiz, is an award-winning interior designer with a strong background in construction and project management. A graduate of the prestigious New York School of Interior Design, she excelled in her studies. Founding her own design firm, Oh! Designs Interiors, she set out on a mission to help clients achieve their dream interiors.

Pamela Durante is one of the 317 Certified Interior Designers in the State of New York.  Having spent many years working on luxury hotels she has an impressive and extensive background in the Hospitality and Restaurant industry. Pamela pursues the use of sustainable products whenever possible and has her REGREEN trained certification. She continues to serve on many Interior Design boards in New York City, is a faculty member at the New York School of Interior Design.  Pamela is also a member of The Decorators Club.
