Fenway Park. Baked beans. Lobster rolls. Dunkin’. Harvard. These are all things that the mind conjures when thinking of Boston, Massachusetts. However, the city is perhaps just as well known for its wealth of hospitals and healthcare facilities, which draw thousands of people each year seeking, and seeking training to provide, top medical care.

Few are as celebrated as Brigham and Women’s Hospital. BWH, or “the Brigham” to locals, is one of the nation’s best teaching hospitals. While its name is a bit misleading (it’s not just for women), BWH is the result of the merging of three of Boston’s most prestigious teaching hospitals in the 1980s.

Its multiple campuses throughout the Boston area partner with Harvard Medical School to provide hands-on educational experience to medical students in almost every field imaginable, from neurology to obstetrics to podiatry and everything in between. It is also a leader in innovation in patient care, biomedical research, and training programs for scientists and other health care professionals.

All of this makes Brigham and Women’s an incredible setting for students who are interested in dipping a toe into the medical field. Emergency Medicine in particular is designed to help students master the basics and explore other areas of healthcare as future careers: Instructors for this program both practice and teach Emergency Medicine, and are absolute experts in the field.

Their collective credentials include Assistant Professor at Harvard, recipient of the BWH’s Bernard Lown Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Medical Director for STRATUS Center–not too shabby! Each session will provide in-depth instruction on:

  • First Aid/CPR
  • Positioning and extraction
  • Stitches and sutures
  • Treatment plan

As part of their training, SSB students will also spend a day at BWH’s STRATUS Center, a state-of-the-art medical simulation training facility, rotating through stations. This unique opportunity is as close as it gets to the real deal–the center provides clinical instruction and research opportunities for medical school students at Harvard as well as the program’s Fellows.   (You can take a virtual tour of the center to get a peek at some of the high-tech simulation equipment!)
